 Rules for Hunting Safely

Many Americans have recently become more aware of safety rules for hunting after the recent wounding of a fellow hunter by Vice President Dick Cheney. Several national media outlets have questioned if safety rules for hunting were strictly followed.
Information on how to hunt safely are posted on the Internet, including some from the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation (AGSF).
This group offers guidelines on their hunting safety rules which outline what a hunter should do before and during a hunting trip.
Taking a prominent place on their Web site is this hunting safety rule: Always point the muzzle away from yourself and others.
Hunter should also establish a zone of fire with fellow hunters before entering the field. The zone should include an area within which each hunter will track and fire should game appear, according to AGSF's hunting safety rules.
Other important safety rules are: make sure to identify the target before shooting; don't take the shot if there is any doubt; do not use a scoped firearm for binoculars; always control the direction of a muzzle during a fall; after falling, check the firearm for damage or any barrel obstructions; be aware of your target and what's beyond it; never shoot at a sound or movement; make absolute certainty of your target; and never mix guns with alcohol, drugs, or fatigue.
The Web site of the National Rifle Association offered no particular hunting safety rules, but they include a code of ethics.
These ethics are common sense hunting safety and include this: "I will obey the rules of safe gun handling and will courteously but firmly insist that others who hunt with me do the same."
The NRA site does offer links to other sites concerning hunting safety rules.
